Shadows and Light is a growing community of filmmakers - run by filmmakers, for filmmakers.

At our conferences, screenings and workshops we bring together filmmakers to learn from each other and to be inspired. At our workshops, we get hands on in practical sessions like lighting, audio recording and camera movement, as well as insights from industry leaders on how to best grow your filmmaking businesses, and more. The speakers and workshop leaders in our community include luminaries like Philip Bloom, Vincent Laforet, Phil Arntz and James Tonkin.

Online we support one another in wide variety of ways, including sourcing camera and gear for shoots, legal advice, insurance and dealing with tricky clients. Through its combination of online resources and in-person learning and networking, Shadows & Light enables you to become the filmmaker you were meant to be.

Show us your Showreel!

We’ve now run a couple of Shadows & Lights screenings. They’re a great way for existing Shadows & Lighters to catch up, as well as for people new to Shadows & Light to join the family. We use these events to screen our work and show each other what we’ve been up to. The format tends to be: we have a few drinks and a chat, we watch some of our films and then a bit more drinking and chatting. If you have something to screen, then, great, but no problem if you don’t: just come along anyway as it’s a great way to network and meet new collaborators.

If you'd like to screen your showreel, it will be on a first come, first serve basis, please submit a copy to

The Importance of BACKUP

The Importance of BACKUP Jonathan Warner Warner Vision                 As content creators it’s essential that our content is safeguarded as much as possible.  Faulty gear can usually be replaced or fixed, but the content we capture cannot often be replicated, in some cases never again. I predominantly work for the corporate sector, usually operating on my own.  In my experience corporate clients don’t care too much what gear we use, just as long as we can deliver the goods, to produce something they cannot readily create themselves. These clients rely on us to […]

The answer is….there is no answer. I myself started with two camcorders – a Panasonic camera and a Canon Hi8 – I used what I had available to me. So the question really should be what do […]

Can filming weddings make me a better videographer Can filming weddings make me a better videographer?” Ben Bruton Cox no-repeat;center top;; auto I get asked this question a lot. When done correctly, filming weddings can be hugely rewarding. And not just in a financial sense, but also in term of professional recognition, creative freedom and being able to travelling the world. Also, because of the steady and predictable financial element, you can gain a great deal of freedom in all parts of your life. So what is it about weddings that can make you a better filmmaker? Ghana Shoot for Tzedek

Ghana Shoot for Tzedek no-repeat;center top;; auto 189548707 700 400 The Brief I responded to a callout from the charity, Tzedek who have a strong relationship with the film school I attended. Tzedek have a number of programmes around the world and, in this case, were looking for a film highlighting their activities in northern Ghana. Specifically, they have an educational programme that focuses on improving teaching methodology. Traditionally in Ghana teaching is very teacher-centred (‘chalk and talk’) and they wanted a film that highlighted how their new child-centred teaching methodology was resulting in improved levels of literacy and numeracy. The Issues around Lighting a Wedding

The Issues around Lighting a Wedding

The Issues around Lighting a Wedding The Issues around Lighting a Wedding” Ben Bruton Cox no-repeat;center top;; auto The ‘No Lighting’ Side It’s all about not being intrusive. Put simply, lighting at a wedding can be very obtrusive to the couple and guests if you set up the lighting badly. It can also look terrible as it can lead to very flat shots with no dynamic feel or look. Also, wedding videographers often don’t use lights as they want to be as mobile as they can. As such, bringing a bulky set of lights with them is not an appealing […]
